This is the first post in our new series “Weekend Warriors” Many Kayak Fishermen have busy lives during the week and the majority of their kayak fishing happens on the weekend. This series, Weekend Warriors, is devoted to these fishermen.
Weekend Warriors – The battle for the fishing hole
With so many people having jobs that keep them busy from Monday through Friday it is no surprise that fishing holes can get quite crowded on the weekends. Full size boats, canoes, paddle boards and of course Kayaks all battle for the same strip of well known water. But it doesn’t have to be this way for the kayak fishermen.
Kayaks have distinct advantages over boats and other methods of fishing:
- They can run much shallower than most boats
- They can run quickly in shallow water when compared to paddle boards and canoes
- They require less energy output over paddle boards and canoes, allowing the kayak angler a greater range
Knowing these advantages a great starting point would be Google maps. Look at the are you plan to fish. Find secluded areas that are accessible only by crossing shallow water or launching from the side of a street. These areas, for the most part, WILL produce fish better than the heavily trafficked areas, and in many cases, you will not be bothered by others trying to muscle in on your spot!
Now get looking at the maps and go find some fish!
