Kayak Fishing Report
Date: 12/01/2014
Location: Mosquito Lagoon, FL
Launch Time: 6:00 AM
My fishing buddy Tony and I decided to try out Mosquito Lagoon now that the cold fronts and their wind and rain have passed. The weather was perfect, 72 degrees with a very light breeze out of the east. We launched our Kayaks right at sunrise. After about a 1 mile paddle to our preferred location for the day fishing started.
We were both throwing walk the dog type lures and the first action was on mine. I had a trout that I estimate to be between 16-20″ bust the lure no less than 10 times, never actually taking the lure in its mouth until the final hit, which he hit from the side and still never got a hook in his mouth! Fish: 1, Kayak Fishermen: 0.
Next it was Tony’s turn. He had a few decent fish take his lure and come unbuttoned. He had a great line “I am not sure what it was, or how big it was, but it felt strong”. Cant call that a fish tale, seems pretty honest! Fish: 3, Kayak Fishermen: 0.
About 45 minutes into tossing my Zara Spook Jr. a large explosion erupted and the fight was on. My drag started to scream and I saw a NICE redfish turn and run, and then.. NOTHING! He broke the hook on the lure! Fish: 4, Kayak Fishermen: 0.
Finally I was able to hook and land a 14″ trout. He hi a 4″ soft plastic paddle tail that I was bouncing off the bottom it the white pot holes. Not a great fight, nor a trophy fish, but at least I got the skunk out of the boat. Right after that Tony caught a 17″ redfish, followed by my 20″ redfish (pictured).
The rest of the day was pretty slow. It was a great day on the water, but not the best day of fishing!
