Redfish on the Lagoon

This morning I decided to put a little bit of the knowledge we have been sharing in our Kayak Fishing Mosquito Lagoon series to the test and went out with the goal of catching a few Redfish.   I loaded the kayak and headed to beacon 42 boat launch and was on the water before sunrise.

The water temperatures are still a little low so the early morning was quite slow.  I did not see many bait fish moving and no Redfish our Trout where to be seen.

As the sun started to warm the water I started to see more action across the flats.  Mullet were jumping and bait fish where getting nervous.  After paddling around for about an hour I was able to locate a small school of Redfish in about 12″ of water.

Using my Penn Battle II 2500 reel on a 7′ Shimano Rod, I was able to cast a 4″ Gulp swimming mullet about 15 feet past the school.  A slow jerky retrieve right infront of the school enticed one of the fish to strike the lure.

In the open water, my 10lb test braid with 12lb fluorocarbon leader was more than enough to handle the just over slot fish.

I was able to track the school and land 2 more fish before they shut down, all about the same size as the one above.  After they shut down I went in search of a Trout, and found a bunch of them.  They were all small, but at least it was a tug on the line!

Gotta love fishing the lagoon!
