Kayak Drifting for Flounder

One of the most popular, and most delicious fish caught from a kayak is the flounder.  They can range anywhere in size from just a few inches up to over 20 pounds, and one of the best methods to catch them from a kayak is to drift fish.

Equipment

Most flounder that are caught inshore are less then 10lbs, so no special equipment is needed for them.  A medium action rod with a saltwater baitcaster or spinning real will work just fine. Sometimes a flounders hit is subtle, so a light action tip can be helpful.  A 2/0 circle hook with a 12″ leader attached to a barrel swivel with just enough weight above the swivel is a very successful right.  The leader should be no heavier than 20lb test and braid or mono work well as the main line, anything around 10lb test line.

Bait/Lures

For live bait, not much beats a finger mullet.  Mud minnows, scaled sardines and threadfin are also great live baits.  Live shrimp are effective, but also attract a lot of unwanted attention from trash fish.  Cut bait will work sometimes as well.  For lures anything that mimics a mullet on the bottom or a shrimp works well.  Gulp Alive shrimp have been proven to be top lures when used on a jig head.

Techniques

Paddle up-current of the intended drift area.  Drop the live bait down and begin the drift.   If the current is to strong and causing the drift to move to fast, move twords the shore where the current is slower.   When a bite is detected allow the flounder a few seconds to get the hook in its mouth before reeling it in.  While drifting the live bait, cast a lure and bounce the bottom with it!
