One of the most important safety tips is how to safely anchor your kayak while fishing. Here are a few quick tips:
- Always attach your anchor to the bow or the stern of the kayak, never the side
- Use an anchor trolley to make anchor attachment easier
- If you can not attack an anchor trolley, attach a float about 10′ from the end of the anchor rope. Use a Caribbean to clasp the float to the side of the kayak. Deploy the anchor and release the float. When ready to move
- gain, simply paddle the kayak in a manner that allows easy retrieval of the float or anchor line!
- If in an area with strong current and waves that are coming in cross current (from the surf or from passing boats) consider not anchoring in this area as the waves can either possibly capsize the kayak or swamp it.
- Use an anchor that weighs at least 3 pounds, anything less will easily be dragged.
